Starting when you earn more is only one part of the choice

A larger contribution can help. So can having more time to make contributions. When returns remain invested, they may themselves contribute to later returns: that is compounding.

A snowball grows as money, time and potential returns work together.
Contributions and returns can contribute to future growth. This is a metaphor, not a forecast; investments can also fall.View full size

Contributions still do most of the early work

In the early years, most of the account value usually comes from the money actually contributed. Over longer periods, illustrated growth can become a larger part of the total.

The practical lesson

The useful comparison is not “what return can I get?” in isolation. It is contribution level, time horizon, inflation and the consistency of the saving habit together.

  • Start earlier if possible.
  • Increase contributions when affordable.
  • Keep growth assumptions illustrative rather than guaranteed.
