One investment can carry several labels

You might see “global equity UCITS ETF” and wonder which part tells you what you own. The answer sits in different layers: global equity describes exposure, ETF describes exchange trading, and UCITS identifies a European regulatory framework.

A layered diagram separates underlying assets, funds or ETFs, and holding structures.
A fund or ETF can pool exposure to assets. Accounts, platforms, pensions and other structures hold or administer investments; a model portfolio is an allocation service, not necessarily a pooled fund.View full size

Three labels, three questions

LabelWhat it describesWhat it does not tell you alone
Fund / mutual fundMoney pooled from investors and invested under a mandateWhether its holdings suit your goal
ETFA fund whose shares or units trade on an exchangeWhether it is passive, broadly diversified or low risk
UCITSA European regulatory framework for eligible investment fundsAn asset class, capital guarantee or proof of suitability

A UCITS fund may be an ETF or another permitted fund form. A model portfolio, by contrast, is an allocation or managed collection; it is not necessarily a single pooled fund.

Read through to the holdings

Compare the mandate, underlying assets, concentration, costs, currency exposure and access. The trading currency of a fund is not automatically the currency exposure of all its holdings.
