What does your existing cover actually pay for?
Medical bills, lost earnings and long-term support for a family are different financial jobs. One type of cover may help with one job while leaving another unchanged.
Life cover
Life cover is generally designed to create a financial payment after death. The planning question is what the people left behind would need for income, debts and future commitments.

Critical illness cover
Critical illness cover is generally designed to pay on diagnosis of specified serious illnesses. The financial problem may be time away from work, recovery costs, debt reduction or creating flexibility while treatment continues.
Medical insurance
Medical or health insurance generally focuses on the cost of treatment or access to healthcare. It does not necessarily replace lost income or provide a large lump sum for family commitments.
Why the distinction matters
A family can have excellent medical insurance and still have a serious income problem if the main earner cannot work for an extended period. Equally, life cover does not pay every time someone becomes seriously ill.
Three different financial jobs
| Cover | Main financial purpose | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Life cover | A benefit on a covered death, for those left behind | Who receives it and which obligations remain? |
| Critical illness | A benefit when a defined condition meets the policy wording | Which diagnoses, severity tests and exclusions apply? |
| Medical insurance | Eligible treatment costs under the plan | Which providers, limits, excesses and exclusions apply? |
Why having one does not answer every question
Suppose medical insurance pays for eligible treatment, but a household’s earner needs time away from work. Rent, debt repayments and school fees still continue. A critical-illness benefit might help with those commitments if the claim meets its terms; it is not triggered by every illness or every period of unemployment. Income-protection cover, where available, is a different product again.
Employer benefits also deserve a careful read. Cover may end or change on leaving a role, and benefits can be limited. Count resources only once: savings already committed to university fees cannot also be assumed fully available for every other emergency.
