A return is a financial transition as well as a move

The flight date is only one milestone. Plan how income, accounts, insurance and investment access will work after the move, while keeping education or retirement commitments abroad visible.

Check the accounts with your bank

RBI guidance requires relevant NRE account redesignation on a qualifying return or status change. FCNR(B) deposits may continue to maturity under the stated conditions; NRO status should also be reviewed. Confirm the required process with the bank.

Indian tax residence and foreign-exchange residence are separate legal questions. Do not infer either solely from an account label. Obtain current advice on dates, worldwide income, reporting and the treatment of foreign investments before major withdrawals or disposals.

Prepare a transition file

  • Residence and travel dates, employment changes and bank correspondence.
  • Investment purchase costs, award dates, statements and ownership records.
  • Future spending by country and currency, including overseas education.
  • Protection that may change when employment or residence changes.
  • Property, business and beneficiary arrangements requiring local review.
