An undecided location still allows useful planning

You may expect to return to India, remain abroad or divide time between countries. Build two plausible lifestyles instead of waiting for certainty.

NRI retirement planning considers India, overseas or a life split between countries.

Separate the budgets

  • Housing, everyday spending and support for dependants in each location.
  • Healthcare, travel and the cost of keeping more than one home.
  • Income from pensions, property or investments, with the currency and access date recorded.
  • Assets already allocated to education or family support, so they are not counted twice.

Compare assumptions before choosing structures

Use the Retirement Destination Guide as a starting point, then replace its assumptions with a personal budget. Test different exchange rates and retirement ages. Property value is not automatically a usable retirement income: include rent, sale proceeds or continued occupation consistently.

Plan the change of residence before it happens

Bank accounts, reporting, investment eligibility and the taxation of income or withdrawals may change on return. Keep residence and asset records, and coordinate local advice before a large transaction.
